Ride-Hailing Giant Grab Acquires Chinese AI Robotics Startup Infermove to Scale Automated Delivery Across Southeast Asia
The acquisition strengthens Grab’s push into AI-driven robotics as it looks to automate first- and last-mile logistics across its delivery network.
Grab has acquired Infermove, a China-based artificial intelligence robotics company, in a move aimed at accelerating automation across its delivery and mobility operations. The deal, announced internally in December, marks Grab’s most direct step yet into AI-powered robotics for large-scale logistics.
The acquisition is expected to enhance Grab’s ability to deploy automated solutions across both the first mile and last mile of its delivery ecosystem, as competition intensifies around efficiency, speed, and cost optimization in Southeast Asia’s on-demand economy.
Strengthening Automation Across Delivery Operations
Infermove was founded in early 2021 by Aaron Lu, initially operating out of a garage in Santa Clara, California, before expanding its footprint to Beijing and Suzhou in China. The company focuses on the research, development, and manufacturing of intelligent robotic systems designed for complex, real-world environments.
Its core expertise lies in autonomous driving systems and mobile robotics, with products ranging from sidewalk delivery robots equipped with robotic arms to personal mobility robots. These systems are built to operate in dense urban settings where navigation, object handling, and adaptability present significant technical challenges.
By bringing Infermove into its ecosystem, Grab aims to accelerate the deployment of robotics that can operate reliably at scale, particularly in densely populated cities where last-mile delivery remains one of the most expensive and operationally complex parts of the logistics chain.
Operating Independently Within Grab
According to Grab, Infermove will continue to operate as an independent entity following the acquisition. Founder Aaron Lu will report directly to Grab’s Chief Technology Officer, ensuring continuity in product development and preserving the startup’s innovation-driven culture.
Suthen Thomas, CTO of Grab, described the acquisition as a strategic milestone for the company’s automation roadmap. He noted that Infermove’s progress in robotics development and real-world deployment aligns closely with Grab’s long-term vision of building a more efficient, scalable delivery and mobility network.
The company showcased Infermove’s latest robotic systems during Grab’s December all-hands meeting, signaling internal confidence in the technology’s readiness for broader integration.
From Early Funding to Strategic Exit
Prior to the acquisition, Infermove had raised more than $3.3 million in funding. In 2024, the company was valued at approximately $33 million following an investment from a subsidiary of Tieda Technology, a publicly listed firm. Market participants in China’s robotics and AI sector indicated that more recent funding discussions had pushed Infermove’s valuation beyond $50 million.
At the time of the acquisition, Infermove was reportedly in the process of raising a new funding round, reflecting growing investor interest in robotics companies positioned at the intersection of AI, automation, and logistics.
A Broader Bet on AI and Robotics
For Grab, the deal underscores a broader shift toward deeper vertical integration in technology as the company looks to improve unit economics and service reliability. While Grab has long invested in software-driven optimization, robotics represents a more capital-intensive but potentially transformative layer in its logistics stack.
As food delivery, e-commerce, and on-demand services continue to scale across Southeast Asia, automation is increasingly seen as a critical lever for sustainable growth. By acquiring Infermove, Grab positions itself to experiment more aggressively with robotic delivery solutions—moving from pilot programs toward production-ready automation.
The transaction also highlights rising cross-border consolidation in AI and robotics, as regional tech giants look to acquire specialized startups with defensible hardware and software capabilities rather than building them entirely in-house.
